Billy Herman is a Hall of Famer; one of the all-time great Chicago Cubs, and he was born on this day in 1909.

He was also, by the way, traded away by a drunk Cubs GM.

Harry Sinclair

Who was he?

He was one of the owners of the Cubs during the Harding presidency, and he did a very bad thing.

Harry Sinclair was born on this day in 1876.

Durocher starts a brawl

It certainly wasn't the only time he did this in his career, but on this day in 1970--exactly forty years ago--Leo Durocher incited a brawl.

They called him Reindeer.

This ex-Cub (shown in this picture on a beach in California with his teammates Grover Cleveland Alexander and Speed Martin--Reindeer's the one in the middle) was a great Cubs catcher and a decent manager, but his greatest accomplishment may have been controlling his darkly alcoholic best friend Alexander.

Reindeer died exactly fifty years ago today.

Prohibition

It started officially in Chicago on this day in 1919, and had a dramatic impact on everyone in the city.
