Endings

On this date in 1912, Tinker, Evers & Chance played their last game together. Frank Chance retired after the game because of recurring headaches.

The other guy in that photo (far left) is 3rd baseman Harry Steinfeldt. Nicknamed "Pete Best 1908" (by me), his name didn't sound poetic, so he didn't make it into the poem.

On this date in 1945, America mourned the passing of their president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He's shown here at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series with Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak (left), who later took a bullet in FDR's presence.

And finally, on this day in 1977, the owner of the Chicago Cubs--Phillip K. Wrigley--passed away. He had promised his father that he would never sell the team, and he honored that promise. His son, on the other hand, sold the team a few years after PK Wrigley's death.
